Plant based supplements are better; here’s why…

If you’re committed to reducing the amount of processed foods in your diet, plant based supplements are ideal. The same can be said for folks who’ve eliminated animal products, and instead are eating whole foods that don’t contain harmful chemicals. Vegan friendly supplements help you add key vitamins and minerals to your diet that are harder to get from eating plant foods alone, such as Vitamin B12. “Several studies show that while anyone can have low vitamin B12 levels, vegetarians and vegans have a higher risk of deficiency.”[1]

While there are many brands of B12 supplements on the market, it’s important to note that they don’t all contain the same ingredients. Specifically, different supplements contain different forms of vitamin B12. Methylcobalamin is the form of B12 that exists naturally in foods whereas synthetic B12 supplements contain cyanocobalamin.

This distinction is important because the human body must first convert cyanocobalamin to methylcobalamin for it to be useful, and some of the nutrient is lost during the process. “As part of cyanocobalamin is, however, excreted before it can be converted, the bioavailability of this form is comparatively not particularly ideal.”[2] To get the most long term benefits, select supplements that are bioavailable, which means they’re made with ingredients that your body can easily absorb.

Clean vitamins and supplements for your lifestyle

As more research is published regarding the benefits of eliminating meat and dairy products as well as processed foods, the interest in clean living is growing. In a recent medical journal study aimed at physicians, the authors made a case for using a vegan lifestyle to combat the alarming growth of obesity, diabetes and heart disease in the population.

“Research shows that plant-based diets are cost-effective, low-risk interventions that may lower body mass index, blood pressure, HbA1C, and cholesterol levels.”[3] Even if you’re not ready for a 100% plant based diet, just cutting down on processed foods can help your health. Start with the vitamins and supplements you take. Switching from synthetic to plant based supplements is one way to cut down on the chemicals and animal products in your diet.
